| Biography | ||||||
| A native of Korea, Dae Poep Sa Nim was born in 1946 and began formally practicing Buddhism under her master at age 12. Six years later, she was given transmission as a dharma and energy master, one of very few women to have been recognized as an enlightened master in Korean Buddhist history. Soon thereafter, Dae Poep Sa Nim became affiliated with the Poep Hwa denomination of Korean Buddhism, and her enlightenment was also acknowledged by Kim Kap Yul, the supreme patriarch of that denomination. At her master’s urging, Dae Poep Sa Nim left Korea for the United States in 1966 and settled in Hawai’i. Convinced that enlightened mind must be combined with actual experiences of the joys as well as the sufferings and crises that attend daily social life, Dae Poep Sa Nim immersed herself in the social world. She worked in a number of different business and professional spheres, married, and gave birth to a son. At the same time, she attended university and holds a doctorate in religious science and is a professor of religious studies. After a decade’s worth of experience in the social world, Dae Poep Sa Nim opened her first temple in Honolulu in 1976 and began devoting herself fulltime to teaching. By 1983, her contributions to promoting peace through the teaching of the Buddhist Dharma were apparent and profound enough to be honored with a world peace award from the Korean government. In that same year, she began teaching in Europe, embarking a series of intensive teaching sojourns that would lead to the founding of Paris Dharma Sah in 1985 (which remains her head temple in Europe) and then fifteen other centers in France, Spain, Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Norway. In 1993, Dae Poep Sa Nim founded the Lotus Buddhist Monastery on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Situated on the eastern flanks of Mauna Kea—a volcanic mountain sacred to the native Hawaiians and rising nearly 14,000 feet above sea level—the Lotus Buddhist Monastery is now the head temple of the Lotus Sangha of World Social Buddhism. It is Dae Poep Sa Nim’s primary residence and is where she teaches monks and nuns and dedicates much of her time to painting. Although requested in 1981 to take on the responsibility of supreme matriarch of the Poep Hwa Denomination, Dae Poep Sa Nim elected to remain committed to teaching in the West and to realizing a form of Buddhism suited to the needs of people living, working, and contributing fully within the social world. Because Kim Kap Yul named her as his chosen successor, however, the Poep Hwa denomination continued to recognize Dae Poep Sa Nim as its rightful head. In 2001, after a quarter century of teaching, Dae Poep Sa Nim formed the Yun Hwa (or “Lotus Flower”) Denomination—an autonomous denomination for which she is supreme matriarch and which is recognized and approved by the Poep Hwa Denomination, as well as by the state of Hawaii and the federal government of the United States. |
